How and Why we Invest

Our Philosophy

We believe that some things are inevitable, such as the long-term shift of Myanmar into a consumer market; but we recognise that change takes changemakers. We seek those leaders, and companies, who can truly redevelop, redistribute and redefine markets.

Myanmar’s population of near 60 million people has been grossly underserved and as the country develops, they are demanding the goods and services that regional neighbours have benefit from. Digital products that improve their lives, financial products that enhance their income opportunities and online commerce that increases efficiencies and creates fairer, safer markets are just some areas we consider will define the Myanmar of tomorrow.

Seed and Series-A investment in any market requires a deep understanding of the local people, politics and society. UMJ Ikeya Investment’s founder and director, Hitoshi Ikeya is a Myanmar-Japanese national who was raised in Myanmar, before moving to study in the US and work in investment banking in Japan. His deep networks and connectedness to the culture equips UMJ Ikeya Investment to identify and work with local companies of a global calibre; and through this investor network is able to bring in new investors to support follow on and continued growth of these leading enterprises.

In short, UMJ Ikeya Investment invests in equity to create a more equitable future for Myanmar consumers where they can enjoy the benefits that so many of us now take for granted. And, in doing so, provide significant returns for our investors.

“We needed an investor who could understand our products, and help others understand them to help us raise and grow; Ikeya san did that for us.”
